If you have taken Standard First Aid & CPR course in the last 3 years, then you are eligible for a recertification course. A recertification can be done in half the time and is typically only one day (8 hours). This refresher course will cover the same topics that are taught in the full course, but in a more condensed format.
STUDENTS MUST SHOW PROOF OF HAVING A CURRENT ( NOT EXPIRED) STANDARD FIRST AID & CPR CERTIFICATE. Certificates from other countries will need to verified by the Canadian Red Cross (A Prior Learning Assessment Review application must be filled out to see if certificates are recognized as a pre-requisite to take this course. Download the application and submit it to PLAR@redcross.ca before registering.)
Students will review and practice:
- first aid and CPR skills using several different learning techniques, as well as different scenarios, and
- using the Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
The course will include any new program updates or standards set by the Canadian Red Cross.

Completion: 100% attendance, skills demonstration, and 75% min. passing grade on written exam
Participants must complete the online learning, be present for the entire course and pass the exam in order to pass the course.

Red Cross Certificate (valid for 3 years)
Certificates are now virtual. Your certificate will be emailed to you after the course has taken place.

- Preventing and preparing for emergencies
- The EMS system (Emergency Medical Services) – When and how to access help
- Workplace documentation & how to complete a first aid record
- The Occupational Health and Safety Regulation (OHSR) and safety data sheets
- Roles and responsibilities of a First Aid Attendant in the workplace
- Check, call, care
- Airway and breathing emergencies (choking, asthma, hyperventilation, anaphylactic shock)
- Circulation emergencies (life threatening bleeding, heart attack, stroke, shock)
- Respiratory and cardiac arrest
- CPR and automated external defibrillators (AED’s)
- Wound care
- Sudden medical emergencies
- Environmental emergencies – Cold/ heat related
- Head and spinal injuries
- How to care for bone muscle and joint injuries
- Poisons

This course is equivalent to OFA 1 and accepted by WorkSafeBC. Learn more about certificates accepted in B.C. workplaces as OFA Level 1 equivalents.
